Travels Through Morocco - Chefchaouen the Blue Pearl, Chapter One

in photography •  6 years ago

Words simply cannot describe the beauty of this place.

Hidden away in the Kif Mountains just a four-hour coach ride from Fes is the city of Chefchaouen. This was to be the highlight of the trip; this mystical, wonderful city with its walls, houses, pavements, everything covered in blue. I heard so much about this place from fellow travellers both outside of Morocco and during my trip, and I knew I had to come here.

Costing me only a very modest 80 Dirhams ($8.40), I took the earliest coach I could at 8:00am in the hope of spending the most time during the day in Chefchaouen. I heard stories of people getting a "Grand Taxi" there, but its only worthwhile when sharing a full taxi. As I was going it solo, I decided to take the coach, which was very comfortable with aircon, reclining seats, an onboard toilets, and can I just say one of the most beautiful views I've ever seen outside a coach. The green hills rolled for miles as we climbed higher into the Kif mountains, with shimmering blue lakes nestled in between the hills. I had quite a late night in Fes the previous night so I had planned to sleep on the trip, but the view wouldn't let me. Instead of resting, I found myself staring outside the window for the entire journey, fighting through the tiredness.

As I stared at the view, a glimmer of blue buildings was in view, hidden away within the rolling hills and next to an imposing mountain. As we got closer, the city was teasing me, showing bit by bit until it became clear that we had arrived. Finally - the city of Chefchaouen! I collected my bag and ran to the taxi rank like a little excited child, impatient to see the famous blue city and to be surrounded by it. The city was split into two parts, the modern half with the bus station and taxi ranks which was a plain white and some blue, and the old traditional city which was layered in a pure blue coating. Slowly, the taxi made its way through the tight roads, suddenly out of the blue (no pun intended) we were in the midst of the old city and I. Was. In. Awe.

190820181125467365457262800.jpeg

Blue as far as the eye could see. Blue pot plants. Blue walls. Blue arches. Blue houses with blue windows with blue stone staircases leading up to them. Even the ground was blue. I couldn't get enough, I was almost dizzy from the sheer beauty of it all. I walked through, eyes darting around because I simply didn't know where to look. I didn't even care where my hostel was. I was exhausted and drained from the trip carrying my rucksack through town but even so, all I wanted to do was explore this city forever, if I could. Even the prospect of peppermint tea couldn't hold me still - I wanted to walk, and walk, and walk.

Eventually I found my hostel and settled down as fast as I could. Even in my hostel was a tide of blue, even my room was blue!! My hostel was called Dar Antonio which literally translates to Antonio's House in Arabic (please correct me if I'm wrong!!). I met with the owner, Antonio, and he told me of a view of the whole city which is breathtaking at sunset - the Spanish Mosque. That would that evening's exploration, and you won't believe how gorgeous it is. Stay tuned for my next post! <3

Yeah it absolutely can get freezing! I've heard some stories, and there's no heating!! And yeah, I spoke to some people and it's meant to mimic the skies to please the gods. Whatever it is, it looks gorgeous.

Tooo Beautiful Pictures Like It

Thanks muchly :)

Chefchaouen is much smaller than larger cities such as Tangier making it a popular stop for off the beaten path types of tourists, and also enjoys a reputation as being one of the safest cities in Morocco. This is certainly impressive considering how safe the majority of nation is.n general, crime does not pose a significant threat to the outlook of tourism to Morocco; although petty crimes such as pick-pocketing and bag snatching are more common in crowded areas. Hustlers and con artists also target tourists. ... The biggest concern for a tourist in Morocco is the popularity of faux guides.download (1).jpg

I didn't feel unsafe in this place at all tbh! Everyone, even the sellers, were far less aggressive and forward than those in Fes and Marrakech. Must be the Kif hashish!

Some say it was painted blue by the Jews who settled there after fleeing Hitler, others say it’s to keep the mosquitos away, while some just said it represents the color of the sea.
What u think about that?

Didn't hear those theories before but very interesting! I thought it was to mimic the sky to please the gods but who knows! I'll have to ask around...

Wow incredible photos mate!!! What was you favourite bit?

Probably climbing the Spanish Mosque, but in Morocco? Too many favourite bits to count!

Morocco have interesting views, I especially like the architecture and the way they color the facade. Thanks for sharing 😊🍻

No problem, happy to share with you guys :)

Gorgeous pictures! When I was in Tangier, they told me that the blue paint acts as a deterrent against mosquitoes. Not sure how universal an explanation that is or how well it works, but I thought it was pretty fascinating!

Interesting, I've heard that theory a lot now so maybe it is just that!

oh so cool blue

Yep!

It's quite alluring. As an ex-pat living in Asia and thoroughly burnout on my hideous surroundings I'm tempted to move somewhere like that. How is the sentiment towards US citizens there?

Where in Asia do you live? I can't wait to move there myself, but I suppose change is always good. I would say same as any tourist really, keep your wits about you and try to learn the local language and you'll earn the locals' respect same as any country I'd say! I would check myself what the sentiment towards US citizens are explicitly though.

I live in Taiwan. And it's fine here. Just ready to move on. The natural beauty in Taiwan is great. The cities aren't so great. Thanks for your thoughts on Chefchaouen.

Have you been to the Philippines yet? If I was to live anywhere it'd probably be on one of those islands. All the best for the future my friend.

No, as close as the Philippines are, I haven't been there yet. Thanks!

Although saying that, Chechaouen explicitly is so laid back I don't think it'd be an issue here.

Wow look at those amazing pics! Great work Sir!

Thanks :)

@seetheworld Wow! What a beautiful place. I love the photography, the way you captured the people was a very nice touch and those rolling hills of crops can't be matched. Great job! So wonderful pictures. Why they use blue color everywhere?

Many theories including keeping out flies to representing the sky for the gods

This blue streets look very cool... :) I must go there and see it also :))

Hope you can!

I try :))

Great pictures. Looking forward of the next chapter!

Thanks so much! Next chapter incoming this week :)

realy amazing

Thanks :)

Truly Stunning

Absolutely.

I've travelled a lot to many countries, but I'd have to say the worst trip I've had was in Morocco. I found the people there very rude and disrespectful. They spat at us, touched my girlfriend, tried to rob us, made a throat-slitting gesture at us and more. This wasn't just 1 incident, it was a constant hassle the whole trip throughout many cities in Morocoo. I'd never go back.

I've also heard the same from friends who have travelled there, particularly females. I've travelled around too and I have to admit Morocco was difficult, it really was. I didn't experience what you had to that extent, but many locals tried were forceful in asking for money for a service you didn't want (such as "showing you around as you were lost"). It was appalling and sad to see. This is why, perhaps, I preferred Chechaouen because the locals there seemed very laidback compared to other cities.

Thanks for the honest comments. Sometimes photos don't paint the whole picture. Anyway, I hope things improve there eventually.

Congratulations @seetheworld.sgp!

I wonder where all theese blue pigments do come from to get all this blue beauty painted on so many walls.

No idea but I did see a huge mountain of blue paint buckets in the new city!
