Gestern war ich seit längerem mal wieder auf Foto-Pirsch im Zoo Basel.
Mein persönliches Highlight war das stattliche Exemplar eines Grünen Wasserdrachens (Physignathus cocincinus), auch bekannt als Wasseragame. Meist im dichteren Geäst des grosszügig bemessenen Terrariums verborgen präsentierte sich das Männchen heute einmal gut sichtbar und in respekteinflössender Pose.
Dieses Exemplar dürfte so um die 60 cm lang sein, vereinzelt werden auch Körperlängen von bis zu einem Meter erreicht.
Beheimatet sind die Wasseragamen im tropischen Regenwald des indonesischen Archipels. Wie für praktisch alle Bewohner des Regenwaldes ist auch der Bestand der Wasseragame in manchen Verbreitungsgebieten bedroht. Für den Grünen Wasserdrachen kommt noch erschwerend hinzu, dass ihre Eier als lokale Delikatesse gelten.
Die ausgezeichneten Schwimmer halten sich bevorzugt auf Ästen auf, die über Gewässer wie Flüsse oder Teiche ragen. Droht Gefahr bringen sie sich mit einem Sprung ins Wasser in Sicherheit. Dieser Reflex ist dem hier gezeigten Exemplar gänzlich abhanden gekommen, nahm er doch keinerlei erkennbare Notiz von meinen Bemühungen, ihn aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln vor die Linse zu bekommen.

When I saw your photos, I was pretty sure it was an agama but after googling it out to be really sure, I figured out this is actually the Chinese water dragon. Wow, never heard of that. Amazing creature though. I love lizards! We are literally surrounded by iguanas here in Mexico, they are my favorite target for photoshooting :) Really cool guys.

Thank you so much :) Well, this guy was about 1 meter long so the illusion of a giant lizard was not even needed much :D But they are really wonderful creatures. Just so laid-back. You can even hand-feed some of them :)
