📷 Photo Challenge - Exercise to Seeing Creatively - 2016/9/20

Hey guys, this is the first post of a series that I hope will continue on. In these series, I will be mostly shooting with self-imposed limitations to force myself to see more creatively. I hope that these exercises will help to improve my photography. Also you will get to see more of what Taiwan is like! Critiques and comments welcome!

Today I imposed myself the challenge of only shooting in the alleyway pictured above. The narrow street is near my home and the gear that I used was a Canon 450D DSLR with a 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. It turned out to be quite difficult since I started this challenge at 10:00 PM, the available light was very low and the lens I used was not very fast, also my camera can only go up to ISO 1600. Anyways, here are 10 photos from the shoot (out of around 40 shots total, the rest were mostly the same shots but blurry).

55mm, 1/15 second, f/5.6, ISO 1600

37 mm, 1.0 second, f/4.5, ISO 1600

18 mm, 1/15 second, f/3.5, ISO 1600

34 mm, 1.0 second, f/4.5, ISO 1600

55 mm, 1/13 second, f/5.6, ISO 1600

18 mm, 1/15 second, f/3.5, ISO 1600

18 mm, 1/20 second, f/3.5, ISO 1600

36 mm, 0.4 second, f/4.5, ISO 1600

35 mm, 1/20 second, f/4.5, ISO 1600

30 mm, 1/10 second, f/4.5, ISO 1600

The people walking by were looking at me, probably thinking I'm weird or something to be shooting this late at night in some random alleyway. I spent about 40 minutes for this challenge, taking my time for each shot.

Overall, I think that was a fun exercise and will definitely try it again. You guys can give me suggestions as to what kind of limitations I should impose upon myself next time :D

Sounds like a fun challenge and an interesting series, I look forward to the next one! I like the shadows in the fourth to last picture!

My suggestion: shoot something considered ugly but make it beautiful!

I'll try your suggestion for my next challenge, thanks!

There are many nice shots! Good luck with your challenge!

I love this:

Have you experimented with Nik Silver Efex Pro for B&W conversion? It is completely free and the best for this sort of thing.

Thanks! I downloaded it before but have yet to try it out, I'll try it out for my next photo challenge.

You've got some cool shots in there. Keep shooting and don't give a crap about what people think ;) Just keep shooting.

Thanks :D
