An Idyllic, Magical Autumn Walk in the Okanagan Mountaintops

in photography •  7 years ago

Welcome back friends! Because I finally got my camera charged up, I now can share with you something I meant to share a couple months ago, a walk with me through the Okanagan mountaintops with Drea the doggo!

This was shot probably in October, when everything was readying for snow. It was one of the last hikes of 2017, and I got some incredibly beautiful photographs. Nearly every single photo was stunning, so there are quite a few, and that is a blessing!

Drea accompanied me on this journey, as usual she is ready to go and ahead of me! She blends in really well to the landscape, I often lose her because I think she is a stump or something haha. She is always close by though, good hiking guard doggo!

The goal of this hike is to reach a high place, high enough to get good views and some windy fresh air well it is still light out. I like to sit on tall rocks and contemplate things well overlooking the valley. I miss it in the winter, but I know that spring will come soon enough.

I came across these picturesque ponderousa (I think) babies and took a little break in the middle of them haha. I often ponder about ponderousa, is that ponderous?

As we walk the views get more and more breathtaking, the fall colours blending perfectly. The left-over smokey haze still hangs in the valley from the many fires that burnt the continent this summer.

I saw a buck on my way to the high-point, a handsome fella. I saw a group of some 6 or 7 does on the way home too, but failed to picture them!

If you can't tell, our landscape is mostly made up of rocks right now. The forest here burnt down in 2003, along with a lot of stuff on our property, and the forest and our little village are rebuilding slowly but consistently some 15 years later. It is a blessing to watch a forest grow anew.

I found an odd object in the woods, where there are no trails (I simply trail-blaze, but have routes I follow). It is not that unusual to find garbage out here sadly, not too much, but occasionally a lighter, a piece of plastic or a balloon that blew away.

What magnificent views! It never ceases to take my breath away, with all the grass and pretty trees still standing in the horizon long after the fire. The sky so bright and clear too, really a breathtaking day. I feel blessed every time I look anywhere! The photos do not do justice to the feeling of crisp air and wind blowing through ones hair, and they cannot capture the sense of being home that I find in the forest or on the mountain top!

I was enjoying myself and hiked to the highest peak around, but the sun was dipping behind the mountain and everything was slowly being covered in the chilly shade, the sunlight faded along with my walk home.

Lets get home Drea the doggo, lead the way! She matches the grass so well, what a picture friendly dog.

We pass by the fallen trees when we near the property line, I think that these were once-proud birch trees that guarded this area, which is actually a swamp for a couple months but is now as dry as a bone!

With this we were back at the homestead, and the chickens were up to their funny buisness hanging out on the trailer and under the bushes they love so much. What are you even doing, chicken?

Goodbye for now Steemit, at the time this chicken and Drea were posing for the goodbye photo. They say good-bye and good wishes! They both are so cute! I hope you enjoyed this old adventure from a time in the past, maybe you captured some of the spirit of the mountain on our walk?

All photos here are photographed by me and my puny canon powershot!

You mentioned that the swamp has gone dry as bone. I hope it still rains there but due to lost natural recharging of water in higher elevations the water has been lost.If artificial recharging is used at higher elevations by digging ponds for recharging the lost sub soil moisture and base flow the swamp and the forest can be regenerated at an accelerating rate. Thanks brother for beautiful pictures.

Ahh, we actually live in a semi desert, so it is normal for there to be little rain in the summer. We went nearly 2 months without rain this summer. Luckily, up on our mountaintop there are underground aquifers or something, but the plants and animals still dont have access to those and we dont really have the means to be building ponds.
There are ponds, and riparian zones, and the trees are coming back so so will the moisture. In the summertime I will show everyone this beautiful riparian zone close to us, my favorite hiking spot, full of ancient ceders that didnt burn down in 2003.

Ahhhh, the Okanagan. Thank-you for sharing your piece of the world with us in this good way! ❤

Thank you, isnt it beautiful here?

Seriously beautiful in BC. I grew up in SK, and stopped in Calgary ..... on my way to BC after college. Somehow, i am still in AB 20 years later. Wonder if i will ever live in BC!!!! Have you lived in the Okanagan your whole life?

Really, there's a lot to love about living here too ❤

Haha yeah I have lived here since I was born, and hardly have been anywhere else. All I know is the beauty of this valley, and I am okay with that for now :P I cant imagine moving!

What a beautiful summer town :)

it is beautiful here, especially in the summer! A wonderful place to visit.

Wow, this is so gorgeous. Thanks for sharing the scenery. It must be nice to be immersed in these amazing views every day!

Yeah it is fantastic really, it isnt hard to work hard when its just beautiful everywhere. Its truely a blessing!
