Ambrosial Marshlands On the Little Tallahatchie River

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

Ambrosial marshlands glow in the morning sunlight in this ancient marshland located to the southeast of the Little Tallahatchie River where it flows next to Sardis Lake in northeastern Mississippi.

Here is a link to google maps for the location of this beautiful place.

The Tallahatchie River is a river in Mississippi which flows 230 miles (370 km) from Tippah County, through Tallahatchie County, to Leflore County, where it joins the Yalobusha River to form the Yazoo River

The river is navigable for about 100 miles. Tallahatchie is a Choctaw name meaning "rock of waters." The sources of the Tallahatchie River have outcrops of iron sandstone.

In this image I lensed while exploring the wilderness area all along the Tallahatchie River, you can see how low the water is when I shot this picture. Everywhere in this picture is usually completely underwater, in fact the dead trees that you can see throughout the image normally only have the very tops of the tree exposed above water.

This area is part of the Lake Sardis flood control zone which, in the event of heavy rainfall in the area, dumps this place full of runoff water from the many rainstorms that pass through this place. With the recent hurricane down in Texas, just a short distance away from this location, you can be certain that this area right now is completely underwater.

I love the vibrant colors visible along the rivulets, the bright green, yellow purple and bluish hues are all from the various forms of algae, moss and other plants that thrive in these dense nutrient rich mud and sand deposits that get carried here by the ever flowing Tallahatchie River. This place is chocked full of life!

This image is from my ongoing project in which I am trying to raise awareness of the 47% of the USA and 90% of Canada that remain unpopulated wilderness.

Where Eagles Fly - The American Wilderness Expedition is my personal mission to introduce people to these amazing locations that surround us.
