Las Vegas Rising Above the Desert on a Misty Morning

in photography •  7 years ago

To all the fans of Las Vegas, this was lensed very early on a wet morning in between 2 rainstorms which were moving fast across the Mojave Desert.

I lensed this while chasing the storms from California on the west side of Death Valley all the way across to the Grand Canyon. I thought it was a pretty interesting image with the iconic buildings of the Las Vegas Strip rising up on the desert floor. The moisture haze in the sunlight is somewhat obscuring the city surrounding the strip giving an ethereal vibe about the image.

I am flying over the Bird Spring Range to the southwest of Las Vegas when I filmed this. The small mountain directly on the other side of the strip (to the left) is called the Frenchmans Range, the smaller mountain to the left is Frenchman Mountain while the larger one to the right is called Rainbow Gardens.

The larger range behind them on the right side of the image is known as the Black Mountains. Across the valley directly above the Las Vegas Strip in this image are the mountains of the Las Vegas Range. While the mountain to the left in this picture is the La Madre Mountain, part of the Red Rock Canyon area.

Las Vegas, like the majority of cities in the USA and Canada, is surrounded by wilderness areas only a short distance from the crowded noise of the city.

This image is from my ongoing project in which I am trying to raise awareness of the 47% of the USA and 90% of Canada that remain unpopulated wilderness.

Where Eagles Fly - The American Wilderness Expedition is my personal mission to introduce people to these amazing locations that surround us.

A place to visit...LAS VEGAS, separate from all the world and its dirty business, a world without any tension..

beautiful picture! Is this natural or is there a filter over the picture?

Thanks! this is shot using a polarizing filter but the slight blur is from motion as I am shooting through an open window in my bushplane so there is slight delta motion artifact from the rolling shutter.

Thank you @skypilot for sharing this images with us.

I'm a nature lover and followed you to see more of the unpopulated wilderness of America and Canada and whatever country you go to.

Keep up the good work
