Pueblo Colorado Wash on the Navajo Nation Reservation

in photography •  7 years ago

This is the Pueblo Colorado Wash just south of Arrowhead Butte located on the First Nations Navajo Reservation northeast of Winslow, Arizona.

This is a very typical Butte geological formation; an isolated hill with steep sides and a flat top. Below the butte to the left is the Pueblo Colorado Wash.

Pueblo Colorado Wash is an alluvial aquifer, located in northeastern Arizona on the Navajo Nation This important wash is about 20 km long and 2-5 km wide and formed by infilling a canyon as deep as 70 m in Mesozoic and Tertiary sedimentary rocks.

This Pueblo Colorado Wash aquifer is the main source of drinking water for many Navajo communities and is an integral feature of the cultural landscape.

I lensed this image while flying southwest from Taos, New Mexico on my way to Winslow, Arizona. It is late in the afternoon and the alpenglow  effect is softening the light and painting a warm golden hue across the desert. This area is very near the painted desert and you can see the vibrant colored sands and rock along the bottom edge of the butte.

From "Where Eagles Fly - The American Wilderness Expedition" my personal project of exploration in the North American Wilderness.
