Rosebud Montana ~ Ancestral Home of the First Nations Sicangu Oyate

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

I lensed this image of the tiny river town of Rosebud, Montana which is located at the intersection of the Yellowstone River and the Rosebud Creek.   I am flying directly above the small creek as it runs up the middle of the image slightly to the right and empties into the Yellowstone.

With a population density was 2.0 persons per square mile in this is truly frontier country. This is the ancestral homelands of the First Nations Sicangu Oyate (the Upper Brulé Sioux Nation) - also known as Sicangu Lakota, and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe (RST), a branch of the Lakota people. The Lakota name Sicangu Oyate translates into English as "Burnt Thigh Nation"; the French term "Brulé Sioux" is also used.

Not far from this location  is where the Battle of the Rosebud (also known as the Battle of Rosebud Creek) occurred June 17, 1876, in the Montana Territory between the United States Army and its Crow and Shoshoni allies against a force consisting mostly of Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne Indians during the Great Sioux War of 1876. The Cheyenne called it the Battle Where the Girl Saved Her Brother, because of an incident during the fight involving Buffalo Calf Road Woman. General George Crook's offensive was stymied by the Indians, led by Crazy Horse, and he awaited reinforcements before resuming the campaign in August.
