The Remote Wilderness of Goose Creek Colorado

in photography •  7 years ago

This is the extremely wild Goose Creek, one of the most difficult wilderness areas to get in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. I lensed this image while flying east bound over Table Mountain at an altitude of 14,500 ft / 4,419 m as I traversed the rugged snow capped Colorado Rocky Mountains in mid-February following during a winter storm. And trust me when I say that shooting out of the open cockpit window during deep winter when it is -20° f / -28.8 c, at this altitude, well as you can imagine... it was cold!

Goose Creek lies on the left of the image, nestled in the forested valley covered by a snow blanket. Sitting 10,600 ft. / 3,230 m high up, this is a formidable and difficult area to reach on the San Juan Mountains in the Weminuche Wilderness of the Rio Grande National Forest.

Not to be mistaken for the Goose Creek in the Lost Creek Wilderness this is adjacent to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (to the left of this image) and just south over the ridge (on the right) from Beautiful Mountain. At the end of the valley you can see South River Peak (13,148 ft / 4,008 m) and to the right over the ridge line are Goose Lake and Little Goose Lake.

This area is such a long ways off the beaten path that there’s really no easy way to get to it. On the right side of this photo you can see Fisher Mountain and the edge of Antelope Park. This is truly Colorado Wilderness!

This is one of the images I have made available to collectors of my fine art photo reproduction prints such as this one printed on satin steel.

And here is a short film of me signing this piece for the collector.

This wilderness image is from my ongoing project in which I am trying to raise awareness of the 47% of the USA and 90% of Canada that remain unpopulated wilderness.

Where Eagles Fly - The American Wilderness Expedition is my personal mission to introduce people to these amazing locations that surround us.

We should be like this man - he find interesting things and become at them good. Find something, try, think and post if you like

Hello! I found your post by looking through the "hot" category. That's an amazing statistic about how much of the USA is wilderness. I see some good spots for a cabin in that photo of yours too. I'll never live far mountains and forest. With both you can sustain life indefinitely as you know. Thanks for sharing, and I'm now following you.

Really awesome
