Danny Thompson Sets the Record for the Fastest Piston Driven Vehicle

Danny adds about 40 MPH to the Record

You may recognize the Thompson name. Danny's Father is Mickey Thompson of Mickey Thompson racing tires. This streamliner was originally his dad's car. Danny completely modified the internals of the car and blew the old record out of the water. Danny was the 2nd car to run in the week long event. Danny made the record run the same day and the average speed from the two runs was 448.757 MPH. The old record was 406.769 MPH. I saw the car sitting at the nearby hotel for the rest of the week. I know he had a huge crew and paid for their hotel stay. I suspect that their team spent the rest of the week relaxing and spectating. It is really an amazing feat to be so prepared to come set a record on the first day without any mechanical or technical issues.

By the way, the 406.769 MPH record was set by Mickey Thompson 50 years ago in the same car. The car has two engines but back then. Both engines ran independently of each other and required the driver to manually adjust two throttles. The streamliner had two Ford 427's with 600 HP on the front engine and 1200 HP for the rear engine. The redesigned internals now have two Hemis with 2500 HP each. There are two transmissions that are linked together with three driveshafts. The streamliner holds 60 gallons of nitro methane. It will burn about 50 gallons and the streamliner loses 500 pounds over the course of a run.
