Exploring the New Manchester Mill Ruins Part 2

in photography •  6 years ago  (edited)

Walking through the old ruins of this Mill from the 1800s reminds me how long we have been using bricks and mortar for building such structures. Though many parts of the structure have unique stonework and techniques that may be long lost by crafters from many generations ago.

This huge block was used to run a water wheel on. Its probably a very hard rock and was brought to the location for that use. Amazing they made the top so smooth with old tools.

These holes were not caused by the Civil War, but by people that showed up afterwards. Our guide said it probably happened in the 1970s when people that lived around the area would come down to the mill and take shots at it with their guns for fun.

Plants were growing out of the many cracks in the brickwork. Making them separate and break down quicker than without them there.

rw-154015.jpeg

Its amazing the walls still stand in many area, though they have been reinforced since the fire during the Civil War days.

rw-154019.jpeg

Some old graffiti on the walls etched into the brickwork. The guide was saying that they suspect some of it was by Union or Confederate soldiers during the late 1800s.

rw-154030.jpeg

Not sure if this was once a door to the outside, or a window. I think a door due to the rocks at the base of the structure.
rw-154101.jpeg

Once where a large factory stood, now its formed a courtyard like feel without a roof over head.

I wonder how many more storms, floods and other natural occurrences these walls will stand up against.

Terrific shots. My personal fave is the last one. I'm really drawn to the angle of perspective in the composition.

@momzillanc I like the last one as well, it shows how little still stands and amazing that wall has not been blown over by winds yet.

@blind-spot sure is, that stuff happened a long time ago and pretty amazing to see some of it still standing.

What a fascinating place! Love the old brick and stone work, and it is amazing that some of the graffiti might have been left by soldiers during the 1800s! This was an exciting thing to hear about during PYPT! Thanks for sharing!

@thekittygirl when I heard about the mill tour I was not expecting much, really glad I got to go inside the fence and see parts of it normally is locked off from people. Hah Yeah people have been writing on walls for a very long time.
