Infrared Photography - Slugs and Snails

in photography •  7 years ago

Infrared photography has really opened my eyes to new possibilities. I would not of thought snails, slugs and other soft shelled bugs that eat nothing but plants would glow in infrared.

It would seem by eating plant matter, which contains chlorophyll the snails and slugs will then reflect a little bit as well with all of it in their bodies. I like how its shell is also reflective, but less than its soft body.

You see it there? Middle of the plant.

A leopard slug was on this tree, within the moss growing on it. I like how the bark does not reflect the infrared, but the moss does and the slug seems to as well. Interestingly the slug is not as bright as the snail in infrared.

My suspicion is leopard slugs are predatory insects eating other bugs. Which other bugs may or may not contain the reflective chlorophyll. Since the snail eats almost always leaves or flowers then it would have alot more chlorophyll inside of it.

Since discovering this, I am going to seek more bugs like them and see what I come up with.

You need to take infrared pictures of fireflies, maybe it looks interesting as well - not sure.

I would need to do that in full spectrum, infrared and ultraviolet photos dont look good in the dark. But hmm, I need to find a place with alot of them. thanks for the idea!

Idk, was just an idea that came to my mind. Seemed quite interesting, I think.
