Hallstatt
In Hallstatt there is an old joke that says: "Here, there are only two ways to die: Drowning or being hit by a falling stone."
Hallstatt is a small village lost in the Upper Austria, with rustic houses, overlooking a tranquil lake surrounded by snow-capped Alps . Not only the beauty of the place, but the history of Hallstatt is interesting.
Hallstatt houses the oldest salt mines in the world! The activity of man in that area began in prehistoric times, some 2,000 years before Christ. The importance of the city in the first Iron Age was so great that one of the periods is called "Age of Hallstatt" , which marks the transition from Bronze to Iron. Around 1846, along with the salt mines, it was discovered a necropolis with more than 1,000 graves. How could it be otherwise, the region Hallstatt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
How to get there...
That are about 3 hours drive split between bus, train and boat from Salzburg. First you need to wake up early to catch the first bus in Salzburg station . The bus station is opposite the city's train station. You should take the bus 150 which will leave the station at 8:15 a.m. . It is one of the bus stops with more people, but in fact some tourists are getting in the way to other stops. The passage can be paid directly to the driver and it costs around 20 euros (round back). The bus journey takes about two hours, but the landscape compensates the way, and for that i suggest you to sit at the left side of the Bus.
You will get out at Bad Ischl . When you arrive at Bad Ischl, the bus station is also stuck at the train station, where you should go. The train round trip ticket is 8.40 Euros. Here, my suggestion is to take the right sit of the train for a better awesome view of the landscapes.
The journey takes about 30 minutes and finally you arrive at Hallstatt station . But you still need to cross the lake to reach the village. The boat ticket is purchased directly when you get in the boat, it costs 2.50 euros and if you want, you can buy round trip by 5 Euros. The crossing does not take even 10 minutes, but is enough to take good shots from the whole village.
Hallstatt is definitely one of that places that you will never forget for his unique beauty and serenity... hope to see it again someday!
