Liquid Nitrogen

My best friend was working at a research institute in New Zealand as an engineer a while back. He was also an avid photographer, and even convinced the institute to make him the official photographer. For that, he got a big space inside the institute as his studio. One time I visited him while he was at work, so he showed me his studio. I asked for some test tubes, beakers and a dewar of liquid nitrogen, and started getting busy.

To create the effects seen here, I used a piece of reflective black paper to line the table where the beakers were placed. I also turned off all the lights and solely use an infrared controlled flash to provide the lighting. The different flashes can also be used to provide lights of different colour using coloured cellophane. Since liquid nitrogen is very cold, it boils as soon as it is poured into the beaker. The mist generated from the condensing water vapour can be used to create different kinds of smoke art.

Nitrogen liquefies at -195°C, so one must be careful when handling liquid nitrogen to avoid burns and frost bites from the cold. But as a material scientist, I am very familiar with the handling of liquid nitrogen. That's because a lot of low temperature experiments, such as low temperature photoluminescence and low temperature Hall effect requires the use of liquid nitrogen. In semiconductor processing, liquid nitrogen is commonly used to control the etch rate of chemical etching. Liquid nitrogen is also very useful in generating high vacuum, due to its ability to condense vapour such as water and oxygen.

When I was doing my PhD, we need to use liquid nitrogen everyday for our ultra high vacuum system. However, our department does not produce liquid nitrogen, so I would need to make a trip to the Physics department everyday, pulling a dewar the size of a LPG bottle, to collect our daily ration of liquid nitrogen. There was one time when I met my best friend (same guy) on my way back from my my daily LN2 run, and I just pour a little bit out from the dewar to show him how cool it was. Because liquid nitrogen is very cold, white fog immediately started to form as water start to condense. It so happens that someone walked past, and as soon as she saw it she covered her mouth and nose and looked as us frighteningly and exclaimed, “Oh my god is that poisonous?” And then she started running. We laughed!Of course it was not poisonous! We are PhD after all and we ain't stupid!

@stabilowl Super cool!!!!

Thanks! Stay tuned for more cool photos!

i watched such thing in old movies ....these thing use to create somekind of magical tricks... very unique photography by the .......looking like animations....

Thanks! I think they might have used dry ice for movies, with is frozen carbon dioxide and not as cold.

Wow. These look so cool. Great photos @stabilowl!

I love the colors and how artsy but scientific it still looks 😂

Thanks! Sometimes there is only a thin line between science and art

Great art
I wish you success for the future

best thing I saw today !!

That's great to hear! Glad you liked my work. Stay tuned for more!

Beautiful photos!

Thanks dear 😊

Awesome :)

Thanks!

The pictures look incredibly cool!

Given that nitrogen remains a liquid far below water's freezing point, I"m supposing that liquid nitrogen could easily cause frostbites. Won't it? So you have to be extremely careful handling it I guess.

Yeah, you are suppose to wear thick gloves and goggles. But really there is nothing to worry about as long as you don't have prolong exposure, ie don't let it soak in your clothes or don't put you hands in it. Some splashes are fine.

Thanks. I am already entering @juliank contests. Just have been quite busy recently. Thanks for visiting 😊 glad you liked my work

You have a great love for chemistry and it shows
Chemistry is more than a science is an art.
The photographs are great

Thanks. Yeah chemistry used to be my favourite subject as school, but what I do now is more physics may be mixed with little bit of chemistry. But yeah, I agree sometimes science is like art!

Okay, I am just absolutely stunned by these colors. Fun stuff to play with sir! :D maybe I should implement that with my next portrait shoot. maybe freeze of some ears haha.

Haha, I think liquid nitrogen probably not suitable for portraits. I think the industry standard for smoke effect is dry ice, may be you could try that! Thanks for visiting, glad you liked my work!

This is absolutely breathtaking and unique. Highly artistic while interesting and scientific! Some of the shots are especially creative, awesome work!

Thanks, glad you liked it! I think science at times are very artistic 😊

Everything can be artistic when you have an eye for what makes it special and interesting and when you are willing to experiment. This particular session turned out fantastic and it's really nice to came back and look at it again.

是的!

wow
AMAZING pictures
great job @stabilowl!

Thanks for your kind words dear! Glad you liked them!

Looks like someone attended Professonr Snapes Potion making class :) Stunning photos!!

Haha yes indeed, although I reckon his classes won't be as colourful as this or else everyone would love potion class!
Thanks for visiting! Stay tuned for more of my photos 😊

You are right, your photos are way more colourful! :) I love your idea of creating some magical effects and take some pictures! :)

You are very welcome and I will follow you to stay tuned to your new posts! :)

Very nice record and beautiful representation of the liquid nitrogen in the photos!

Thanks! It was fun for me to take these pics as well!

the pictures are great , did you use color gels in your flashes

Kind of, I think we just used cellophane, so not really proper color gel. My friend have this homemade filter that diffuses the flash light, and we just tie the cellophane on top of the filter using a rubber band.

Actually now that I remember harder, for this set it was with colour gels. The first time that we have used it I think, it was almost 10 years ago, so it's a bit foggy. All I remember was it was heaps of fun 😊

Love the effects that the nitrogen are displaying. You could have spilled some over a dark table and take foto's of how the dropplets would jump around and evaporate with a hissing sound ;)

Yeah it's pretty cool, there's quite a bit of splashing going on, but wasnt able to capture much of that. The paper underneath also started to bend from the cold, bending the reflection, which looked weird

These are so cooooool!

Hey thanks!

I'll bet this was one super-fun photo shoot! Great job.

Yes, it was super fun! Spent a whole day found the shoot 😊

great photos!

Thanks dear! How's your trip going?

mmmmmmm
