Possibly the Most Stunning Sunrises, Sunsets & Ocean Vistas You May Ever See!

IMG_1487.jpg

Photos from Dirk Hartog Island, Western Australia

Please enjoy some of the stunning sunrises, sunsets and ocean vistas that I recently witnessed while holidaying on the very remote, and very difficult to get to Dirk Hartog Island (DHI) - the most western part of Western Australia.

I hope that you are going to love some of the photos that I took almost as much as I enjoyed taking them with my iPhone - but first let me share some quick facts about this very unique island.

All photos were taken by me unless stated otherwise.

Fun Facts

  • Discovered on 25th October 1616 by Dutch sea captain Dirk Hartog on a ship named the Eendracht
  • DHI celebrated it's 400 year anniversary on 25th October 2016
  • DHI is located within the confines of the Shark Bay World Heritage Site
  • 80 kilometres (50 miles) long and between 3 and 15 kilometres (1.9 and 9.3 miles) wide
  • Western Australia's largest and most western island
  • DHI covers an area of 620 square kilometres (240 square miles)
  • Texas will fit over 8 times into Western Australia and the UK will fit in 10 times
  • DHI was the world's most remote pizzeria via a pop-up restaurant on July 24, 2016
  • DHI has only 5 permanent residents mingled with staff, conservationists and toursits
  • Stunningly wild, raw, clean, natural and remote

Getting to Dirk Hartog Island

16 friends and I descended on the island by car, plane and boats for some sun, relaxation and mateship. It was a boys trip and girls were not invited this time - sorry ladies, but us men need to spend some quality time with our mates now and again - just like the ladies enjoy spending quality time with the girls.

Last time I checked there were 52 weeks in the year and we just want one of them to oursevles and anyway, how much trouble can you get into in the middle of nowhere?

It's not like we're going to Thailand!

If the ladies want to visit DHI then we'll book another holiday - no-one ever misses out and family is incredibly important!

We took one 4x4 vehicle on to the island (leaving the rest of the fleet on the mainland) and three motor boats for fishing, snorkelling, diving and exploring - and about 40 fishing rods and every lure, hook, sinker, line, bait and alcholic beverage that you could imagine - plus we had the use of quad-bikes, sea kayaks and a few more toys.

Our Campsite for 3 Nights before moving into the Eco-Lodge

Some of us arrived earlier than the main group and camped for 3 nights in tents and under the stars before spending a week at the Dirk Hartog Eco-Lodge (Homestead) which in situated in one of the many bays on the island. The lodge faces north and overlooks the ocean.

When you look to the right you see the sunrise and when you look to the left you see the sunset - it's magnificent and I hope that the pictures do it justice?

Prepping for a Big Days Fishing

IMG_1485.jpg

Filleting the Days Catch

We filleted all of the fish at the end of every day. Showers and dinner had to wait and seeing that we had a chef cooking our meals that was not something that we needed to be concerned about. We vacuum-packed and froze every fish on site. It was hard work so it was fortunate (and good planning) that we had plenty of refreshments on hand.

The South Side of the Island

The north side of the island is protected from the buffeting Indian Ocean while the north side takes all of the hits from the King Waves which is why the coastline is so spectacluar.

Last Day

These two bad boys slept in and missed the boat. Seeing that it was our last day and that we had a lot of packing up to do we arrived back at basecamp early and dropped our lines in for one last fish close to shore.

Unperturbed, and not wanting to miss out on the fun these boys jumped into the dinghy and motored out to us - refreshments in hand of course.

It was a sensational holiday!

@creatr

It was my pleasure.

Merry Christmas

Your post and particularly your campsite made me dream like I rarely do. It made me reconnect with nature ironically.

It made me think about going where civilization will have a hard time getting to you if you ever need help from civilization....

I'm glad that you enjoyed it @teamsteem :)

Bugging out and getting back to nature sounds very appealing to me. It's amazing what becomes important when you get back to nature and it's amazing how some of the things that might consume today soon become irrelevant.

awesome photos:)

Thank You

So, you're a sandgroper steemtruth! I'm impressed that you are a fellow Aussie, considering the nature of your posts, which are world class. Our eldest son was born in Derby Hospital, after an RFDS transfer from Kununnurra. We were living in Wyndham at the time, and spent a bit of time exploring the Kimberley, including fishing trips from Broome, and Honeymoon Beach near Kalumburu Mission. Exploring the NT was just as good, if not better. Worked at Kakadu, Katherine, Darwin, and a few stations for a while, and spent a bit of time at quite a few Aboriginal Missions. Learned a lot from time spent there. The missus' sister lives in Perth with her hubby, Paddy, and their boys, so we've visited a couple of times. Do you ever get over to the east coast? I'll see if there's a way of sending a PM on steemit, it's new to me.
