Tips for Winter Photography

Although winter may not be the favorite season for all, it certainly makes for some stunning photographs (as you can see). It’s time to make use of those SLR cameras (you received for Christmas :) and capture all the beautiful moments, like your parents shoveling snow while you play with your camera. Here are some tips to help you out.

Keep your equipment safe. Cameras can handle the cold, but if it becomes very frigid and your shutter gets stuck, try placing it in your jacket to warm up.

Avoid taking pictures in gray, overcast skies. These photographs will look bleak and dreary. Of course if that’s the look you’re going for, then by all means. But good lighting will reflect off the snow, leaving you with a glistening shot.

You can, however, break the previous rule when it is snowing out. Capturing the snowstorm itself will be a truly awesome event. After the storm is done, quickly ready yourself to take pictures before the snow becomes ruined with footprints, dirt, and slush.

Lastly, don’t forget to photograph ice and winter creatures. Ice forms interesting shapes and patterns so do some macro photography. Winter animals will only be around for so long. Don’t leave them in the dark!
