An Ugly Duckling

in photography •  8 years ago

I don't like the story of the ugly duckling. It gives false hope. Too often I have seen ugly people remain ugly and often, get even uglier with age. I don't care too much about looks but the way people act is where the true ugliness is seen.

Today, I saw a woman on the train struggle to disembark with a little boy, a scooter and suitcase in her arms while several other capable people stood impatiently watching her juggle it all. I excused my way through and helped her off. This is a common occurrence and manifests in many ways here.

I have no idea where the concept of civic duty disappeared to globally. I hear almost daily people talk about preserving their culture and having national pride yet if the culture is one that does not help a person in obvious need, a need that would require just the slightest of effort to satisfy, what are they protecting? What kind of nation is it?

I am not a fan of culture at the best of times, let alone the ugly parts.

This swan in Helsinki harbour is beautiful though.

Taraz, I appreciate the honesty.

Yeah, in today's world it is very easy to be self-focused. Or just be cautious. I find that I am always debating whether to extend help to a stranger in need, primarily because there had been lots of reported cases where kindness offered turned into a bad story. Anyways case-to-case basis, like in this case easy to decide on.

We hear stories of it going wrong but how common are they in comparison to all the ones we don't hear that go right? Bad news sells.

A good point right there.

It is becoming a very sad world. I have by choice withdrawn from it, but do have to drive into towns and cities for various reasons...it really saddens me when as with your example, I come across people struggling, or the elderly making mistakes. I don't have to think twice to help, and the bystanders? Some of them were just taking photos or videoing, I guess to send to their friends or Facebook.
What is wrong with people?

I think 'what is wrong woth people' is an eternal question.

I've helped woman with baby carriages go up stairs, and old women with shopping bags go down stairs. It doesn't take much effort or time if you're already there, and going the same direction ;)

berniesanders of steemit seems to love being ugly inside. How hard is it to let people keep what the support they get? Not like he has to do anything like vote for them. His mindset is to step on the woman's leg and break it to get her out of the way, rather than help her... lol.

Not enough hugs as a kid perhaps.

Unfortunatelly people often act ugly:(

Well, it probably doesn't help that if you try to help someone, and they take it the wrong way, you'll get your head bit off, and that if anything goes wrong, they'll probably sue you. Wish I were joking, but I'm afraid that's the world we now live in.
