Different perspectives of the same thing are vitally important and I see that in the future, this is the way that a lot of the information we receive will be. That sounds a lot like now but, the difference would be that private citizens will be the ones reporting, taking pictures and giving their views of the same events and that will be compared to that of official sources on the fly also.
In time, the blockchains can stamp and verify the sources and make it all open for discovery. There will be different perspectives, views and opinions of course but the picture will be much more complete and with decentralized, unrelated sources, much harder to fake.
Even now the social/local source reports can verify greatly from the official reports which throws into question the entire story. Is this by design? I would say that this is engineered to throw all information under the same bus so it is up to the audience to pick and choose what is believable and the audience is notoriously bad at being objective with information that supports or, information that conflicts with their views.
Once we are all sources of open information when it comes to the events that affect our personal lives but without the social proof of herd mentality, our views might average to be a relatively clear look at an event. News becomes consensus driven without people ever having to be in contact with each other. An AI might be able to handle the data from all the various sources and match up all of the points that overlap to build a rounded picture.
I wonder what the world looks like if instead of people watching centralized news services, their information is served via a decentralized, verifiable and traceable set of sources localised to each event. Will it still be as sensational? Will we still be glued to media outlets to get the latest information? Will it be more or less practical? Will the world seem as such a scary place? Take away the incentive of advertising revenue and associated network rivalry to sensationalize news reports for viewer numbers and the news goes back to being useful.
My belief is that when it comes down to it, we all essentially want the same things from life. A chance to work at something we enjoy and the possibility to grow while doing it as well as safe places for our kids to discover their own bests. Watch the news though and suddenly the world is full of fear and cruelty.
Just some quick thoughts.

This would be great!
...for people who care about facts.
Of course, everyone will say that they care about facts but many really just care about affirmation of their world view. So media outlets that cater to a specific demographic will always have a captive audience and advertising revenue.
But for those who truly care about facts, this can't come soon enough. It's tedious having to do your own research, check multiple sources, and try to build your own picture. Having an AI do all this for you would be wonderful. I, for one, would probably be interested in the news again.

One question to ask is: will the established news media allow that to happen? They still have a lot of control over what information is sent out. Look at Apple and it's newsfeed that it pumps to iphone users. They're not just going to let it go.
It's the same as any company buying up technology that would render it obsolete... and then scrapping it.
While this would be a much-needed improvement to our news system, and while it is possible that it could happen, I think that if it does, it will be a long time in the making. Just my feeling on it.

I think it will happen. Decentralized news verified by a blockchain with its participants doing it for free or being paid through the same blockchain. It's a very interesting idea. It could work as a network maintained by volunteers like Wikipedia or a paid service with cryptocurrency as the main payment method. But even as a network funded by volunteers and governed by a foundation like Wikipedia, it could be transformative. Interesting times ahead. The world has only seen a tiny fraction of the impact the distributed ledger technology will have.

I am hoping that the decentralized nature of th future will make it obsolete and stopping it like chasing ghosts. Just because that makes it cooler.

The media is a power house . He who controls the media controls the world . To gain any type of decentralization would be one hell of a fight . The media companies are owned by a few companies . They need to be broken up like Ma bell was . That would be a start . Most of the news channels should have a disclaimer across the bottom " COMMENTARY " .
It used to be where every channel had to broadcast news as a public service . Thing of the past . People seem to watch the news to reinforce their views and entertainment instead of information gathering .

As an information source it is already largely irrelevant, it is just an echo chamber for various forms of emotional support. They ould put up a 'bit of a fight' but, with enough decentralised users, what can they really do? Rather than add competition, just make them obviously irrelevant.

they would do what they always do . Buy them out . Interesting concept and would like to see it . eventually it will come about in time . The changes taking place with blockchain will change everything in the current systems being done today . Sixty years from now they will be teaching the "Blockchain Revolution" like they taught the "Industrial Revolution" due to the radical effect it had on society .

I believe a decentralized blockchain for news has the potential to provide us with news from many perspectives, at least for those who are rationale enough to determine what is correct and what is not. However, many people are emotional when it comes to whom they believe. Especially at times of conflict, how accurate and believable the news is not as important as who publishes it.
