Apollonia

Hi, Steemit!!!

The modern city of Herzliya, as we all know very well, is located somewhat north of Tel Aviv. A little to the north of Herzliya along the seashore - the remains of the bastion Arsur or Arsuf, the castle of the Crusaders. The first of the known cities that emerged on this site was built in the sixth century BC. Today, on the ruins of Arsuf, the Apollonia National Park was created. The disintegrated fortress of the Crusaders was surrounded by a dry moat, powerful walls and gates were preserved. Arsuf had gates and walls that extended not only to the coast, but also to the sea, along which the crusaders received reinforcements carried by Genoese ships, but could also be attacked by Byzantines or Saracens. Inside the fortress there were preserved rooms - dining room, arsenal with stone nuclei for ballista, residential and administrative premises.

Why was it named Apollonia and not Arsur?

Arsuf is an Arabic name, and Appolonia is Greek, but it is the name of one and the same place.

Dear friend, ancient Apollonia is in nowadays Albania not near Tel Aviv...

I live in Herzliya, it is 13 km from Tel Aviv, there is no Albania nearby and the excavations of Apollonia are conducted in my city :)

Yes, there are dozens of Apollonia :)

The best known ancient big centre in 6th century B.C. is that one in Albania, where minted coins with cow on it...
Please, make more photos and stories about excavations. Thanks!

Thanks!
