Steel Wool Photography #1: Firewater

Doing steel wool shots can be extremely tricky. Finding the right locations, the right lighting and angles are all challenges that will be faced when attempting it.

Mike (Instagram: mikeheinhold) and I have done steel wool quite a bit and thought that we had a good handle on it. So it was time to make it a little harder lol. We climbed down the escarpment in Hamilton Ont. (Canada) in the dark and with a light rain. The original plan was to have lights set up behind the upper Chedoke waterfall and spin the steel wool beside it. But after setting the lights up behind the falls and doing several test shots. We realized that was not going to work, the light washed out the whole bottom half of the waterfall. We moved the lights in front of the falls and began snapping.

I wanted to add this picture to the post. Just because this waterfall itself, is my favorite one in the area and is quite the sight at night!

Mike gave the steel wool a second spin beside the falls. This one gave a very cool effect because the sparks were bouncing off of the rocks that had a slight overhang above him.

Unfortunately after only a couple spins we had to pack our gear up and head back out. The rain got heavier and the wind picked up, blowing mist from the falls right at us.

It was a great new challenge and I hope all you steemians enjoy the results.
