Hamilton Ontario, the steel city. Is Canada’s largest steel producer and is home to a sprawling heavy industrial area. That in its “hay days” from the 1950/60’s until 2003 was home to companies such as Westinghouse, Otis elevators, Studebaker, Firestone, Stelco and many more! In 2003 the steel sector employed 80,000 people but responding to global competition in the last two decades. That workforce has been drastically reduced and the only steel companies that remain are Dofasco and American steel.
Despite the closures and reduction in the workforce, the steel sector lives on! And in this photo series I will be highlighting the grit, hard work and perseverance that takes place on a daily basis!
The first installment is Steel At Dusk, a look at the industrial area and the work taking place. As the sun sets in the distance.
Stay tuned for more installments in the series!
