Years ago, I passed through the very small town of ILA, Georgia (US) — population 345 people — while en-route to another destination. In the middle of the tiny "downtown" area is a row of buildings which I thought was pretty and had potential if the photo was processed in just the right way.

I think I was correct, and here is the pic of this charming little block of buildings:

I used a processing technique which took me a long time to master. It makes the resulting image look slightly like High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography, but it isn't true HDR (so I call it quasi-HDR processing). I have used this technique rather often in photographs of barns, as it helps to being out the details in dark spots rather well.

Just for fun, I will now show you the original shot which I took from the back seat of the car while we were stopped at a traffic light (the only traffic light in town!). As can be seen, I did a lot of painstaking editing to remove power-lines because I thought they distracted from the scene.

I have recently been employing a different technique for processing some of my photos, as can be seen in some of my recent Old Barn Project posts as well as my entry into the recent Tell Me About Where You Live contest. Really, go ahead and click that link, look at the photos, then come back, I will wait... 😁

So, I wondered how the town of Ila would look with the recent processing employed and tried two different twists to the technique. Here is the first:

And here is another edit with a vibrant, more 'electric' effect on the colors:

Which are your favorites?
—the original?  —quasi-HDR?  —new technique?  —vibrant?

 😊

I remember when I was in the US last (a long long time ago...) passing through small towns like this in the midwest in out-of-the-way places in SD and Kansas and Wyoming.... To me, they are the quintessential rural towns, very distinct architecture.

I like them all my friend! Can't pick just one... but if I had to, I'd probably say the first one. This reminds me of the towns my Aunt used to create... and those apple people ... remember those? Dried apple pieces with stockings pulled over them? Ah... memories...

Beautiful photos and story... as always! Thank you for sharing with us...

I do love playing around with effects on photos, just to see what I can come up with. I like the top one; reminds me a bit of old-time "hand tinted" photographs and postcards... which goes well with the building styles, too!

My goodness, this looks like a watercolor @thekittygirl. Well done :) It almost makes the original phot look too harsh and formal. Love it!

I like the first one the most; I like the colours and think the sky looks good and foreboding.

I'm also not a fan of power lines. I've passed over many a good photo opportunity - or just deleted the photo - because power lines are all over the place. Main Street here is like that, too.

Oohhh nice! I love what you do to your photos! My next question would be, how do you do that? LOL ^^ thanks for sharing! ^^

Trade secret ;)

As Wes said, it is a bit of a trade secret... LOL! I do the processing in my PaintShopPro™ software, editing of the original, then applying filters, then merging, layering, tweaking.. Glad you like it!. 😁

I vote for the quasi-HDR :)

Looks like a cool little town. Great shot. I like the first edit the best.

you became a quite photographer these days kitty. This one look's so cool, thanks for sharing at #pypt

_Oh this main street reminds me of the town (actually village) where my kids grew up! Population was under 600- there were more cows in the village limits than humans!

Ahhhh sweetness thank you for that @maxuv token

The colors and tones of the bricks in your first edited photo are my favorite. I can relate to being annoyed by power lines and know what a pain in the butt it is to manually remove them. I applaud your tenacity as well as the final product! 👏👏
You are good daughter for putting the needs of your parents first. Sorry to hear they both passed away. I believe the road of life led you where you needed to be and when the time comes, you'll know where the next chapter will be. Blessings to you!♥️

Howdy thekittygirl! Wow you did alot of work to take out those lines! I like the top one the best, then the original but they're all good. I love small towns like that!

Sry for being here so late after your presentation at #pypt @pypt Discord channel but in my defense I can argue that I’m on a holidays trip so...
I liked your work on this shot, well the original one was good enough to play with. However I stick with the quasi-HDR version 😁
Love n’hugs ❤️
