One of the things that anyone who has ever looked at an old photo has noticed is that everyone seems so angry or unhappy. So until I saw the image below my whole life I kind of imagined that they were just angry and unhappy people.
I still don't get why the photographer would not try to get happy pictures or smiling pictures instead of the stone faced ones we all see. If you would post a photo like that now on Facebook, Instagram, or SteemIt people would think you were mad, unhappy, or depressed.
So I'm glad to find out they were not angry and unhappy and it was just a quirk of the time. The people were still just getting use to the new technology of photography and didn't think how those pictures would be interpreted decades later.
I would imagine there were also some nerves involved. After-all it's not as if you could just click 20-30 pictures like we do today. At the time they were sitting down, normally in their best cloths, for an annual or even one-time occurrence. Pictures from that time that show people laughing are smiling are very striking, and put a smile on my face.
