In The Cathedral - Stained-Glass

in photography •  5 years ago

For this social lens series we are looking at religious sites and how people relate to these places.

Stained-glass windows in churches are probably one of the most characteristic features of Christian churches. They are a stark contrast to the monochrome and muted surroundings within churches. Like windows to another world they present themselves to the observer. And when one happens to witness them on a sunny day, their luminescence is indeed quite otherworldly.

As we have observed, churches and their ceremonies (at least within Catholic churches) are directed towards the senses. And colored stained-glass makes no exception: they capture the eyes' attention and drawing them to symbols, figures, shapes and lines. Often a biblical story is engraved in them with Jesus at their center . Sometimes more traditional work has also been replaced by a modern interpretation which may remind oneself of the works of Miro and the like, imprinting the zeitgeist of our time onto these religious sites.
