This little guy is a North Island Fantail. These birds feed on insects, catching them on the wing. So as you can imagine they are pretty agile.
What this really means, is that they don't sit still for more than a nano-second, and they don't fly in a straight line.
So getting a good photo of one is really difficult. Add into that, the fact that they stick to woodland areas where it is often quite dark, or dappled with spots of sunlight, and you have real challenge on your hands.
I managed to get this photo on New Years Day on Somes Island, which is in the middle of Wellington harbour.
It was scorching hot that day and a couple of fantails were taking a dip in this old fountain. So I had an opportunity to fire of a few hundred shots with my camera. I got a couple of ok shots, including this one.
My biggest ambition with my camera, is to get a good photo of a fantail in flight.
If that ever happens, Steemit will be the first to know :-)
