Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo

in photography •  8 years ago

In the area of Palermo, Italy, there is a monastery which is quite strange with the funeral. The pastors build underground rooms that cater for a funeral, and burial is unique not bury the bodies into the ground, but by doing the embalming process as a mummy and dressed with clothes on and hung on the walls of the monastery. Uniquely, the mummy could be dressed like a man who is still alive, even following the trend as well. A funeral like this takes place from the 16th century until the 19th century. And are eligible for burial in a way it is just the people who are considered reputable. Finally in the 1800s where the last body was mummified, there have been 8,000 mummies that inhabit inside the abbey.
