unwttng's daily photo #8 - An Edinburgh Skyline (originally 'cradle of the heavens')

in photography •  8 years ago  (edited)

As well as being, and writing about being, a software engineer, I'm an avid amateur photographer. One issue I have with steemit at the moment is that it seems vastly in favour of written content (especially about the crypto-ecosystem) and seems a little dismissive of images. In my opinion, quality image content in the form of user photography, CGI and traditional art is just as valid. With that in mind I'll be putting a new photo here every day. I'll include a little bit of personal context around each one in case you're interested! (I'll also include this paragraph in them all for the time being).

Today's photo (today being Tuesday the 27th September 2016, 2016-09-27) is of one of Edinburgh, Scotland's many, many beautiful skylines on a particularly striking day. This photo was taken from the Queensferry Road bridge over Dean Gardens, an expansive bit of green space in the middle of the city. I had the chance to seriously expand my knowledge of this beautiful city last week whilst plodding the streets looking for a flat - silver linings :)

Lovely. Thank you for posting. One of the worlds most beautiful cities, is it not.

It is indeed! Proud to call it my new home :)

Thank you for your reply. In that case, here is a query for you. Do you know the story behind the lay out of the city?

I don't! Very interested though?

As the story goes...there was a contest open to all to submit a plan for the layout of the town. The plan that was approved had been submitted by a young man,17 years old. Another interesting story is around the statue of a dog, a terrier across from Edinburgh Castle, perhaps outside the cemetary. Put there by Queen Victoria after she heard the dog's tale. a lovely story of loyalty. These stories came to mind with your photograph and perhaps they are in writing somewhere.
Thank you for your lovely photo.

Very interesting! The competition is indeed referenced here (under "A New Town). Thanks for sharing!
