Bird [3]: Tulo Puteh Ulee (Lonchura maja)

Tulo Puteh Ulee is the name of the bird species in the Acehnese for White-headed Munia, is the same meaning in English, in scientific terms known as Lonchura maja. Other common names are white-headed nun, white-headed mannikin, silver-headed Munia, cigar birds. ¹

In Aceh, this munia is commonly seen in open grassland, bushes, swamps, and most often found in groups in the rice fields when the rice plants begin to seed. I shot these photos in the bushes at Ulee Lheue, Banda Aceh.

According to data published by finchinfo.com, the distribution area includes Thailand, Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Bali, and a subspecies found in Vietnam named the Vietnamese White-headed Munia, Vietnamese Maja.²

This species has a very large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km2 combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population trend appears to be stable, and hence the species does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). ³
