For several centuries already, many people around the globe found the pleasure of the fragrant aroma and flavor that brings from smoking a hookah. Using hookah (galyan), goes back to the 1500s in the Middle East and India probably, it’s a very honored tradition in that region where it was common to smoke by all kind of people from peasants to kings. These days you can find hookah beyond the Middle East region and the Arab world, people share the pleasure of hookah and shisha around the globe. Through centuries the way of smoking hookah didn’t really changed much, but couple of new changes brought the hookah to the new level in the 21 century.

Basic Design and Components of Hookah

Before we go deeper in the history of hookah let look into the design of the object to understand it better. Specially these days hookahs have very different shapes and styles, but the basic design has 5 major parts. The bowl or the head you will find on the top of the device. This keeps the tobacco and coals and it is usually built from clay or marble. The Bowl contains tobacco and then it’s enclosed by screen. Most of the time screens are made from glass, metal or aluminum foil.
