Do laws support us?

“The more laws and restrictions there are,
The poorer people become.
The sharper men’s weapons,
The more trouble in the land.
The more ingenious and clever men are,
The more strange things happen.
The more rules and regulations,
The more thieves and robbers.

Therefore the sage says:
I take no action and people are reformed.
I enjoy peace and people become honest.
I do nothing and people become rich.
I have no desires and people return to the good and simple life.”

Lao Tzu - Tao Te Ching

I'm not calling for anarchy. That's not my point. But I do definitely want to raise the legitimacy for debate. Every change in humanity has taken so long because each stage demanded loyalty to its taboos - to the place they hold the the line of the legitimacy to question. Do such large governments with their so intrusive laws and the absolute mandate to take the individuals' freedom, when not complying with what happens to be the current "mainstream" idea of things; do they actually serve us? It was a great stage in the human evolution, but might we not be beginning to ready ourselves for the next stage?
