Journey to $1 million with photography...ghosting in Shanghai

Since I moved back to Shanghai last May, my life has been very simple. I work during the week, and I shoot portraits on the weekend. I did travel quite a lot, so although I currently live in Shanghai, I haven’t had the time to visit tons of locations on my ever growing “places to shoot in Shanghai” list.

February in China is the Chinese New Year month. The entire country pretty much shuts down for more than a week in an already short month. I finally have some days off, so it is time to go out and hit that shutter button! I did spend two days straight binge watching both seasons of Ghost in the Shell anime. A lot of what I shot in February were affected by it.

When I think of portraying Shanghai as a cyberpunk city, I think of East Nanjing Road at night. I end up doing two shoots there, once when it rained and once when it didn’t. I defiantly prefer East Nanjing Road in the rain. The dripping water from the sky adds a different mood to the city.

However, when it was pouring outside, I did have to resort to shooting indoor. I put those LED lights to work again. Still not very happy with how things turned out, but hey, the only way to improve is to do more.

I also checked out an interesting bookstore. The transparent wall fully covered in the text was defiantly a great find to me.

My favorite shoot of the month had to be my shoot with Yarina. Yarina is a tech & fashion blogger that puts out kickass contents. (you can checkout her blog here) The two different looks that she put together were very on point. When I thought about locations that can be very colorful, I thought about an old-school Arcade. Luckily there are still few left in Shanghai. The first look was shot at Liehuo Game Center.

For the streetwear look, we hit up one of my favorite spots for outdoor portraits in Shanghai, 1933. I have to do a separate post on this spot; it has so much different possibilities. It was chilly out, but Yarina modeled like a champ. I love how the look turned out.

February came and left in a breeze. I started to get into a better rhythm of doing more shoots. With spring just peaking around the corner, I am excited.

My total after February = 25.68 USD
