Book Covers! Before and Afters

I have mentioned before that I submit my images to an agency for image licensing. The stock agency that I work with is called Arcangel. I have been licensing images through them for a few years, and have had a great experience working with them. If you are a photographer that is interested in becoming a contributor please check out their website.

Arcangel Images

Here are a few of the images I have had licensed for book covers. Sometimes they use the image as is, but sometimes they combine it with other images or edit it to suit their needs. I have no say over this process so if you are a photographer that doesn't want your work tampered with than this might not be for you.

Here are a couple of examples where the images are pretty much left as is.

Here are some examples of how an image might be altered.

Sometimes the image is so different that I don't even recognize it as my image . bookcover5.jpg

Occasionally I have had the same image licensed for different covers.

I find this particular example amusing because of the originals. Here are the behind the scenes images.

When I started a few years ago, I had a million questions and didn't know anyone who had licensed images before. I had to learn as I went what the process was like and what to expect. If this is something you are interested in please do not hesitate to ask me about it. I would love to answer any questions you have!

Thanks for sharing I would quickly check their site. I know it would be nice.

amazing work

Thank you 😊

Thanks for your information. I wouldnt even know where to start.

I don't have many photos yet, but this is helpful and I had no idea they modified photos like that(especially with parts of the same photo for separate covers.) Is there any particular way you approached this company when you first started working with them? Anything to keep in mind when first contacting them and marketing yourself to them?

on their home page there is a link for new contributors. I joined a few years ago so I am not sure if the process has changed, but I had to have at least 30 images ready for submission. It would be great if you had more so that they can have a good idea of what your work is like. They accept images of all sorts of things, people, landscape, still life. A good thing to do is just go browse through their galleries and get a feel for what they like. Because they mostly deal in book covers you might find that the images in their gallery have much more creative and artistic feel to them than more generic galleries for other commercial or web type uses. If you use people you will need model release forms. One of the reasons I just use myself and my kids, cuts down on paperwork. But other than that I don't recall them having many requirements for new contributors.

Thanks for taking the time to elaborate so much! I'll keep them in mind. :)

Loved this post! It really got me thinking... perhaps I can find some agency that licenses illustrations!

Arcangel does illustration too!! Though they aren’t super well known for it... if you find a really good agency for illustration let me know because I’m interested too! I’ve submitted quite a bit of illustration to Arcangel and they only accepted a handful I’m thinking I’m just not their style 🤷‍♀️

Wow! I tried to search 'Arcangel images' here and I found it!
Nice to see you dear colleague!
I'm with AA less then year and have no single sale yet! But i keep going. :)

keep going, I've been with them for 4 years. the one thing about the publishing industry is it is really slow!! I think it takes around 6-8 months from the time a publisher finds an image to when it is all done and you finally find out that it even got selected for a cover!!

Sighs...
Anyway! Thank you!
