My mom told me that ever since I could walk, I loved making sounds and "music" all around the house. Receiving a small toy piano as a gift, 4 year old me thought his passion was found. At age 7, I started going to an academic music conservatory; studying both piano and cello, as well as theoric subjects like "teoría y solfeo", "armonía", "práctica pedagógica", choir, flute, etc.

Fast forward 13 years:

Studying in an IB school, and being fascinated towards visual arts from a young age, picking Visual Arts as my High Level subject was a no brainer. The first problem I encountered was: what am I good at? Music alone was not a viable option to create a complete 14 work exposition.
Time passed, exposition deadlines where getting EXTREMELY closer and I yet didn't find my medium to portray my art. That's where Photography kicked in.

It was a fairly cloudy February day when I decided to call two classmates so I could photograph them. I knew I wanted to put eyeliner on them, include roses, and color lights my father gave me. Without knowing anything about artificial / studio illumination (and without caring at all) I started my shoot. I suddenly became obsessed with the power of photography. Being able to create a tangible, printable piece of work that conveys your emotions and artistic view is absolutely incredible.

Not everything was perfect. I then encountered another mistake in my work. What do I wanted to shoot? What do I want to convey? What symbolism, or meaning, runs behind my work? Even a year later (today) I'm still finding myself as a photographer, and artist. I know I like shooting woman, and portraying femininity in it's various forms; as well as portraying emotions. In this shoot I wanted to show how love is a double edged sword. It can be the most uplifting feeling, or the most devastating one. To represent this, the roses are use both as a beautiful and "aesthetically pleasing" element as well as a weapon to hurt. Purple lights represent Love as a pure everlasting sensation. The red lights represent the person of the relationship that hurts while the blue represents the person being hurt, realizing love was an ephemeral sensation.

Advice for starting artists: never give up. It takes time to find yourself. I have been constantly shooting for almost a year and I still find flaws in my work, and see my growth with each shoot I create. It's all about consistency and passion, and never giving up, that you will truly see progress in yourself. While some people might like this photoshoot session i showed throught the post, I've noticed a lot of points I could elevate, and make better. Even the greatest artist you might admire and look up to started like you, like me.

Don't get discouraged and never compare yourself to others.
