The Above Average Food for Malaysians

Ever since I got back to Kuching, my hometown, I've been eating non-stop for the past weekend till today. I just finished snacking on Rambutan. Rambutan is a sweet fruit like lychee but bigger. Usually mum would peel its flesh and store em in the fridge so it's cold and eaten as desserts.

Well, if you noticed, whenever you bump into that Asian friend of yours, we're always either eating or on our way to eat something delicious. That is no exception for us Malaysians because food is ALWAYS a topic whenever we meet up with friends or family. And to celebrate every occasion it's food first instead of alcohol.

That being said, I'm here to just give you a gist of what a slightly better than normal dinner looks like for the average Malaysian family who is out either celebrating for an occasion, or just want to have a full hearty meal. For Malaysians, when we head out for dinner with the family, we usually don't go ala carte or individual sets. We would usually order several dishes that consists of meat, vegetables, soup, fish or maybe sometimes seafood.

When the food arrives, we would then each have a bowl of rice while we take from the variety of dishes in front of us.

The 7 Course Meal

We would usually start with the 5-6 mix meal dish where usually it'll consists of mushrooms, springrolls, chicken, smoked duck and squid. Depends on what the restaurant wants to put on it. But it's like the starter before the main dishes arrives.

While waiting for the next dish to arrive, some of the alcohol lovers would start their first glass of alcohol. For me, I would usually have a glass of wine, hot Chinese tea(cause I'm Asian like that) and a fruity drink like Shandy or Zappel Fizz drink. Each drink to match the different dishes that are about to come.

Seafood Platter

As Seafood is very cheap in Malaysia especially in seafood cities like Kuching. We would always have a seafood dish or two. Crab, Prawns, Scallops, Abalone, all these said to be our favourite food but I don't personally like eating crabs because of the work you have to put into breaking the shells to get that little meat inside it.

Shark Fin Soup

The third or fourth dish would usually be a soup based dish. If the family is willing to spend a little more on the meals, the soup would usually be shark fin soup. Yes... I know... we probably cut off the fins and throw the shark back into the ocean to die... It's sad.. I know.

The next few dishes would probably depends on what we feel like eating that night. Sometimes it could be roasted pork or roasted duck like the above. The fish dish would also arrive and also depending on the budget, differs the type of fish we would order. Usually the price would then be counted by how many Kilos the fish weighs.

The course would usually end with something much lighter like the yam basket with mushroom and vegatables inside and tofu. Sometimes, the restaurant would compliment the guests with fruits to finish off the dinner meal or the family can order sweet desserts called tong sui which means sweet water.

If you ever come to Malaysia and ask any family to bring you to a Chinese Restaurant, this is what you will get. Depending on your budget from RM100 to tens of thousands, the restaurant would accomodate to it and your preferences of dishes you want.

I better stop writing anymore now before I need to head out for supper myself... BUT before that... here's a tease for you.

Also known as the Foochow Burger. The dough is baked with sesame seed and is crispy outside and soft inside. It is then filled with minced pork with a little bit of the pork gravy. A simple but fulfilling snack for tea time. :) Om nom nom nom...~
