Scott's Friday Photo - My favorite Leading Line

Sawtooth Mountain in West Texas

As a photographer I look for ways to compose a photo, to make it more than just a snapshot of something I though was pretty. There are many techniques that you can use to do this, and one of the most common is the use of leading lines. The idea is to use a line to draw the viewers attention into the photo and lead their eye to where you want it to go. In this case a road.

As a travel photographer, I am naturally drawn to the road. In the photograph the road leads my eye into the scene to the interesting rock formation. But notice that the road does not lead directly to the formation. It leads past it, to the next interesting thing just over the horizon. That's the real attraction of the road. It takes me to somewhere interesting, but then it leads me away from that to the next interesting thing further down the road.

In a photograph, I can carefully choose my perspective and use the road to change the character of the photograph. In life the road that I choose changes me. While I use roads as leading lines to shape my photos, I also use them to shape my life.

That solitary cloud looks kinda spooky over there.

Well we were near Marfa. They are supposed to have spooky, unexplained lights at night, but we didn't see them.

The picture is gorgeous. Well, we architects think that if we assume a strong bold road line into center keeping focal point, golden point on the center road line, picture/ composition will be symmetric. It's creates one point perspective which i am seeing right now. Brilliant capture on that point because one point perspective create strong aparture and u can control audience eyes and vision... hehe... i hope you understood my point because i am confuse that whether i explained it correctly towards you.

Thanks. There is just something about a road leading off into the distance that pulls me in.

Scott

Howdy tonight xcountytravelers! wow that is an interesting technique so use, that's for that explanation. Now I need to travel someplace so I can try it out!

This is the Davis Mountains area in Texas I was telling you about!

Howdy tonight xcountytravelers! oh that is a gorgeous view with that wonderful road shot and the mountains in the distant, great job and I'll just have to get out there sometime. And I'll be thanking you guys when I do!

We so want to get back there. I want to do some hiking.

yes I can see why but don't you guys have other places to go like all those counties?

We do, but many of the places we have already been were so amazing that we want to go back. We definitely get pulled in multiple directions when planning a trip.

haha! I understand xcountytravelers, I have no idea how you decide with so many wonderful choices out there! I guess I would let weather(the seasons) dictate what general direction and then whittle it down from there.

One of the thing Scott can count on me saying about every place we visit is "I want to live here." Some day we will have an RV again and will be able to live wherever our wheels are.
