Help! I need a physicist or chemist.

This water is supercooled -20°C in a cave in Russia. I understand the water does not freeze because it is pure (no impurities). Question, why doesn't the scuba's presence in the water make ice form around him. Thanks in advance.

This depends on several parameters, like the pressure, temperature and density of impurities. We may have actually supercooled water here (you can find information on this a bit everywhere on the web).

I hope this helps!

His presence is clearly not enough to cause nucleation. Or the water in the chamber is moving rapidly hindering nucleation (think like a river). Either way something would be stopping the water molecules from orienting into crystalline configuration. I can't say for certain from the picture.

One option is that we may have a kind of slush around the diver that is not really observable on the picture.

I know that the exhaled air is captured (or a tube to surface was used) and not released. No air bubbles. The page said they did that as to not damage the cave.

What I was actually meaning is that we may have a kind of slushy state of water around the diver. Not icy, but not liquid too. I am however not too sure.

My guess is that the diver's body heat keeps the suit above 0 deg C.? Pressure / depth are my second guess... Neat picture...

i don't know anything of this, But Awesome Pic. I hope you can found help
