What exactly are Black Holes? Everything you need to know about them

in physics •  7 years ago

The craziest thing about black holes is they have never been observed. Since their gravity is so powerful that not even light can escape once it is trapped, this light therefore can never reach our eyes so have never been seen. Black holes are a theory that fill a gap in a puzzle to make the rest of the puzzle make sense.

Black holes occur when a super massive star dies and as a result collapses so much that it shrinks even more than a neutron star which gives it this incredible gravitational force.

To understand black holes, imagine shrinking the Earth to the size of an apple seed, and let this seed still have the same mass as the Earth. This gives this seed incredible amounts of gravitational force. Anything has the potential of becoming a black hole if you shrunk that object so that it had its specific Schwarzschild radius (everything has its own Schwarzschild radius, can be calculated using an equation)
