I don’t know about your house, but at our house, we celebrate Pi Day! Not sure what Pi is? See the explanation from Wikipedia at the end of this post!
My wife has a master’s degree in mathematics, so, naturally, she is all in for Pi Day, which is celebrated on March 14th each year representing the first 3 digits of the mathematical number of Pi – 3.14. Pi goes on forever, so a good Pi joke you can tell your spouse is that you love them for as long as the equation Pi goes on!
While math nerds will know the value of Pi and truly appreciate it, I appreciate eating pie on Pi Day! My wife has mastered the homemade apple pie, and having a “pizza pie” for lunch or dinner is always a bonus.
There you have it, a glimpse into our nerdy life. Have you ever celebrated Pi Day?
Now go compute something to celebrate!
Brian
Here is the Wiki explanation:
“The number π (/paɪ/) is a mathematical constant. Originally defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, it now has various equivalent definitions and appears in many formulas in all areas of mathematics and physics. It is approximately equal to 3.14159. It has been represented by the Greek letter "π" since the mid-18th century, though it is also sometimes spelled out as "pi".
Being an irrational number, π cannot be expressed exactly as a common fraction (equivalently, its decimal representation never ends and never settles into a permanent repeating pattern). Still, fractions such as 22/7 and other rational numbers are commonly used to approximate π. The digits appear to be randomly distributed. In particular, the digit sequence of π is conjectured to satisfy a specific kind of statistical randomness, but to date, no proof of this has been discovered. Also, π is a transcendental number; that is, a number that is not the root of any non-zero polynomial having rational coefficients. This transcendence of π implies that it is impossible to solve the ancient challenge of squaring the circle with a compass and straightedge.”
Shoot man, when you coming out. Golf courses are in there prime, and I want to see you hit a real one, not a fake ball over someones house.

OK, you have to be joking. So, in grade 8 I teach a math unit all about circles and of course all of the mathematical formulas to do with circles are based on Pi. You can't solve for the area of a circle or the volume of a cylinder without Pi. We learn all about the relationship between the diameter of a circle and the circumference which is where Pi comes from. It is irrational because the number of diameters or radii in a circle are essentially infinite and therefore Pi is never-ending. All that being said, at the end of the circle unit every year we celebrate with a Pi party. Students bring in a variety of pies and cakes (Cylindrical) and we spend the whole class eating pie. This year I even had a student make cookies with the Pi symbol and various formulas written on them. So much fun. I must admit though that I have never celebrated on the actual Pi day. I learned something new today. Thanks!

My wife went to the pie store today, but all they had left were whole pies... no slices. As she cares about my health, she got me a Pi Day cookie rather than the whole pie. It's nice to know I'm loved... although I wouldn't have minded my own pie. ;)

As a student of mechanical engineering I see a lot this but I did not know the day jejeje, important to know and how they celebrate it ?? I would like to see what they do to know if we can do something in the university.

You'd have to be irrational to not celebrate Pi Day! Especially when there is real pie involved.

At first I thought it was something like a cake so I put the google browser but as I read more deeply I can see that it is a mathematical expression as you say here in your post, but also associate it with a foot or pai that is as it is pronounced, I did not know that there was the day of the PI, happy day of the PI :D

I do not get along very well with maths, I think we are maths enemies and I think I do not remember this, I even confused this day with a cake hahaha every day we learn something new I am from Venezuela we do not celebrate many things not now, you can show us how it was your cake? by the way right now I'm going to investigate about the pi

Hello friend, this is something new here in my country oh yes it is, I think I get to see this symbol in some of my math classes but I did not imagine that there was a day of the pi, I went to google and I see that google celebrates, I think we should update in venezuela haha happy day you enjoy your cake @brian.rrr

Hi friend @brian.rrr how are you ?. In my case it's the first time I've heard about the day Pi and when I read the publication I liked it a lot since in my case I hardly read the day of the day I already knew what you were referring to, since in high school and in the university I saw a lot Mathematical constants in the subjects of mathematics, physics and statistics, although I was not very good in those subjects if I solved the exercises studying a lot. As you mention it, the pi is used mostly with formulas to calculate the circle and diameter of a circle or a rectangular triangle. I congratulate your wife and you for this day, and surely that pizza pie was exquisite. Greetings to you and your beautiful family friend.

Wow that’s amazing Pi is a Greek letter and 3.14 backwards spells Pie (kind of) which is the way you pronounce that letter in English ..... hmmmm

His explanation of the Pi number was very interesting and easy to understand. I have a Master's Degree in Food Science, and I applied it a lot when solving unit operations exercises in the food industry. But beyond that, the important thing is that with that excuse they could celebrate a family day. All the best for you and yours. Best regards.

pi = 3.14 Fixed approximate value.
