Avoiding the dreaded tilt

Hello! For you pinball players out there that have experienced the frustration of tilting your machine in the middle of a great game check this out. I am going to explain why some players are able to shake the machine constantly and never tilt while you give the machine one nudge and do. The pictures below tell the story. Two systems are incorporated on all games new or old. The ball sitting in what looks like a small rain gutter has one purpose. Ever wonder when the ball in play goes down the side chute if you could pick up the front of the machine and roll it back on to the play field? If you try the ball in the "rain gutter" rolls forward hits the contact and tilts the machine. The other mechanism which causes 98% of machine tilts is the little pendulum with the ring around it. If the upside down metal cone hits the copper ring you tilt. This is where technique comes in. Slow gradually increasing very even shaking causes the pendulum to basically "float" inside the ring without touching it. A sudden hard jarring push and your done. Time for another quarter. To adjust how easily the machine tilts all that is required is squeezing the release clip under the cone and moving it up to a wider section. This will require less travel of the pendulum to to hit the ring and tilt the machine. Now that you know how it works time for more free games!
