I have started with a Traditions Kentucky Pistol DIY kit. It includes a precut wooden stock (birch I think, medium soft wood) that's about 75% correct for fitting the components, but still needs a fair amount of wood removal.
For phase one I focused on only removing enough wood to make the bare minimum fittings and assemble this to fire. Once I've test fired it later today I will disassemble and begin the stock finishing in earnest, which will include a mother of pearl inlay, a set ruby, some wood burning, reshaping, staining, and oil sealing.
