Where is the secure place to stand outside in a thunderstorm ?

Laying down or in low foliage such as shrubs is your best bet if you wish to remain outside. Lighting is drawn to metal objects, which is what makes lightning rods so effective, and then barring that to the tallest object in any given area which is why they tell you being under a tree in a thunderstorm is a bad idea.

So you want to get low to the ground in something else that's low to the ground to avoid making yourself the tallest thing in the area and avoid metal objects, mostly, and you'll be relatively fine.
