Ipomoea part one: Invasive plants

in plants •  6 years ago  (edited)

Morning glories all fall into the Ipomoea family and after the heavy rains of the last 2 months, the invasive members of the family have grown madly and they are all flowering. Morning glory is a serious pest in South Africa because it smothers all other vegetation. They are native to many parts of the world, including South Africa but the indigenous species aren't invasive here. First sown in South Africa because of the beauty of their flowers, they soon grew out of control. They are beautiful and here are a selection of the flowers that are currently blooming all over.

These are all variants of the common bindweed Ipomoea purpurea, with heart-shaped leaves

This is a different species, Ipomoea indica

The difference is immediately apparent in the leaf shape:

Although people think that the blue form of morning glory contains compounds similar to LSD, this isn't true. There are some hallucinogenic members of this plant group but that's not it.

It is a pity that Ipomoea invasive plant ...
I didn `t know about it.
Ipomoea seeds are sold in the store in Russia and Cyprus, and it is grown as a cultivated plant!

I'm shocked at the number of plants you have pointed out to be invasive species.

Sadly there are many more

Informative thank you! I didn't know this was invasive, but then you don't automatically expect that with pretty flowers do you? In the UK we have a number of invasive species, such as Himalayan Balsam. If this is found on your property it can seriously devalue your house!

Invasives are just a mess here

Beautiful colours! Love to have these in my garden!!

You mean there aren't any in Thailand?

I like this plants, they are pretty! I don't mind if they invade my yard!

Until you try removing them

They are beautiful and thankfully have invaded my place too 😀 I wonder how come there's so much similarity between our places.. because most of the plants you share also grow in the himalayan region.

Probably a climate similarity. We are also high-altitude, short, cold winter, long summers with a few rainy months

Very beautiful delicate flower. Looks great.

Hermosas flores, todas lo son. Pero las imágenes que tomó con su camara, las muestra en toda su plenitud.

Thank you

I have them here too. A bit of a pest but the flowers do look nice ...

loving them, difficult to germinate and they fear the cold when small
