Greetings, everyone. Upon arriving yesterday from our 5 day trip to Mazatlan, Sinaloa, I discovered my wheat plants decimated.

I don't know if Dingleberry the Rooster is to blame for breaking the spikes initially but when we arrived, there was an army of leaf cutter ants carrying away all the immature grains.

I didn't manage to take any pictures of the ants because I was sick and exhausted from the 8 hour drive back and I just wanted to get some rest. Perhaps the wheat will sprout new spikes in a last effort to produce seeds. I always think about how squirrels rip off the single large flower bud of a sunflower only for it to produce many more smaller flowers. Plants can be remarkably resilient and determined in their effort to reproduce.
Either way, I won't get to see what ultimately happens to the wheat since I go back to the United States in 2 weeks. At least one I'm there I can plant more without worrying about chickens or leaf cutter ants.
Thank you for stopping by and hearing my tale of woe.
That is all, folks.

Try putting some chicken wire around it next time; anything to fence it in to protect against whatever got to it. I've made some creative solutions sometimes with large dome-shaped screens, and it seems to protect my plants from random freak attacks.

Yes, you can always start over again. The warm season is soon approaching.

Thanks for the advice. I should've known it wouldn't have survived out in the open like that. Nothing here does haha. I'm glad to be going home soon

Dingleberry is going to miss you. 😆

My uncle jokes and keeps saying he's going to turn him into Kentucky Fried Chicken when I'm gone!

oh no. I hope your uncle is just really joking. haha
