The gourd (Cucurbita maxima Duchesne) - a species of plant from the gourd family. It comes from Central and South America. They were cultivated already 3000 years BC. The main cultivation areas are today's Mexico, Guatemala and the southern regions of the USA. Wild species of C. lundelliana Bailey and C. martinezii Bailey are found in this area. Some sources say that pumpkins were known and cultivated as early as 5000-7000 BC. Cucurbita species came to Europe through Spanish sailors, then spread to other continents
