Long Before - a poem

in poem •  7 years ago

Long before we learned to crawl and beg of our rights
We sang and sold all of us to rice
Funny I know,
But truth be told, what did we expect.? How did we see it all playing out in our minds,

You lost? Ok...lets go back in time.

Long before they fought and sailed across the wide and deep,
Before we ever knew our brides will dance in chains and breed out slaves
Yes,before our children knew how to hate at 3
Long before we realized our fathers weren't more to us than strangers
Long before our mothers ever knew their husbands will trade their pride for rags, we were sold out.
Sold to greed and bread, our innocence snatched and snapped into shreds,

We were shown a reflection that wasn't us, beneath us
We were traded for silver lighter than feather
We were given for the hope of growth and and infrastructure,

Let's go back to our beginning when we were rootless
When our fathers were turned cold and ruthless
When we were blessed and cursed
When bridges were meant to connect us and not dissect us
Were our differences were meant to unite us and not separate us
The time that could have been all that it isn't

Maybe all we need is uproot our roots that have grown beyond our good
Maybe our stems have grown weighty and we're now growing weary

And if so,
It's past time to turn cold and rootless
Our roots we must untangle from the ties we've made to too much goods
It's past time to consider and ponder

I say it's time to blur the lines drawn, no separation
Discrimination will ruin our nation
Because somewhere deep within us we are have a knowledgeable understanding
Yes, that understanding that only in the atmosphere of sustainable peace
Can we enjoy sustainable development
