A story, a poem and a touch of horror

This is something I wrote many years ago, it still brings back bitter memories, I am sure that some of you will identify with it.
It's subject matter should be obvious to anyone who has gone through the experience themselves.

In my mind there is a door,
That sometimes stands ajar.
Revealing to the inner me,
Thoughts that lie afar.
When those unwanted mind things,
Come shuffling down the lane,
A shudder from my mind springs,
To block away the pain.
Do you, like me have a secret rooms?
Where thoughts are locked away.
A fear, a horror a bloody moon,
That need the light of day.
My room is somewhat small,
With dust upon the floor.
Voices from the corners call,
Of darkness from before.
Do you friend, have a creature too?
You keep under lock and key.
Have you, like me watched it grow,
As my monster grew for me.
I remember long years ago,
When it came to visit me.
I wondered how it seemed to know,
What set my spirit free.
It found a place within my heart,
It made me wise and clever,
I always knew right from the start,
That it was mine forever.
I saw no wrong in it's willing help,
To free me from my tethers.
I still recall how it smelt,
It made my life seem better.
Then a day came, I recall not when,
I saw it's darker side,
I wished it'd left me then.
The road to ruin is wide.
I fought the monster face to face,
There was no other way.
I locked it in that hidden place,
A room so cold and grey.
I still know it's there,
I still hear it call,
It sings it's Siren's song.
But it's locked behind the wall,
God only knows how long.
