The mermaid

clothed in her fins
shining like a pearl
she swam towards the ship
hoping to catch sight of a human

she loved to see the men
they looked so handsome to her
she loved to see the dresses the women wore
and looked down sadly at her own

the dolphins loved her company
she played with them a lot
she too wanted to be with her kind
but she had been alone since a child

lusty eyes followed her
she knew it did not mean well
she swam away and did not look back
went back to her own place

there lay awaiting
a man so handsome
he smiled and welcomed her
he too had fins

she thanked the gods
went and confirmed he was real
she was so happy, she felt
hoped it was not a dream

the sun shone
the water was calm
the world seemed so beautiful
she did not search again

I write poems to express myself. I started writing at the age of twelve or so and some of my poems were published in magazines for children, a time when print still ruled the world. The internet and the blogging world has helped me write poems. Most of it was as I wrote earlier, to express myself and my thoughts. I have also been a ghostwriter.
Steemit has helped me write with freedom and also earned me very good friends who encourage me to write. I hope my readers will support me and also join in this contest. I am not a student of literature and so I do not consider myself an expert in poetry. It is the judge who will decide.
