Born from hard earth
And tried beneath the waves
Hardened by your fellow man
Yet pieces lose their way
Falling to the open waters
Or merely knocked out of place
The whole itself continues
Leaving memories in its wake
For many these seem nothing more
Than twigs and stones and sand
But for the countless that came before
They were places they could stand
Gazing outward at the lonely sun
That earns the earth this day
And holding something in their minds
For time to pluck away
Their moment there is fleeting
Under that endless sky
As time just keeps on beating
And your heart begins to fly
Its silent passage shrinks the mountains firm and tall
Reduces an overgrown first to barren waste and all
Ravaging its lonely path across our tired world
Touching all, forgetting none
With fingers tightly furled
We make our stands and find the spots
Hoping, praying it has forgot
Endless were those beaches and the sand underfoot
Timeless in their memories of all of those that stood
Although their footsteps are washed away
As time leads an endless tide
The hourglass is simply flipped, sand falling from inside
It's in this earth we are remembered
In every blade of grass
Upon the rolling hillsides you are sure to pass
The echoes of what used to be sing out for all to hear
To teach and guide you through the daze
As it rings between your ears.
