Ole Tainted Blues ( 100 Days of Poetry) {Day #70}

in poetr •  7 years ago  (edited)

He gave his last light labouring,

hopes of retiring with enough to get by.
Living in the comfort of a systematic lie.
Nowhere to turn but back to work.
This time, wages slashed like a sale
because of his age.

Pension is like a detention,
somewhere to stay,
but you can't go out and play.
What a way to treat, with a trick.

He wished
he had spent his time more wisely.
Building things that would last,
Something he could pass to his children.
He couldn't give them his job in a will.
And they wouldn't want it.

This is heavy.

Indeed, I was inspired by a guy I over heard talking about not having enough money and having to go back to work after retirement. Very common story.

He wished
he had spent his time more wisely.
Building things that would last,
Something he could pass to his children.
He couldn't give them his job in a will.
And they wouldn't want it.

This is really a heavy one! It is very rare to find poems like this, a poem that makes you contemplate about life. One thing I'm sure of, I wouldn't want to end up like this old man, so better spend my time wisely :)

Hi:) Yes exactly what I wanted the reader to contemplate. And instead of living out this story, just learning from it and consciously creating a favorable future.

Oh my God! What a sensitive subject It is true, the end of a worker's life is discolored and unsightly. After giving his life for a salary, the common people depend on a miserable pension that does not even reach for the medicines of the degenerative diseases of old age. And, others, not even that and they are forced to work for less salary each time, due to their age. The criticism is aimed at the insensitive society that sees the elderly as a burden and is a call to the people who work who value their time, that not everything can be work, because in the end, life happens and has not been lived.
Good job, @dmilliz. A hug

It is very sad state for the elder with this false hope. It works out for some people but not most.
Yes, they can barely by the medicine they need, while in some countries these necessities are free, health insurance free. Indeed, especial countries like Japan, they see the elderly as a burden with politician actually saying " they should hurry up and die." What a world. Thanks for your comment.
