Forbidden Affection

in poetry •  7 years ago

So I've always wondered if it was possible for a woman to genuinely love a much older man without being interested in his wealth. After watching the Nollywood movie, 'Love Regardless', it got me thinking if this was really possible in our society. So I wrote a poem about it. Please resteem, upvote and don't forget to tell me what you think about the poem.

Forbidden Affection

Forbidden Affection

It all began as a joke
You were intrigued by my voice as I spoke
I had come to your office for a job interview
My poise clouded your judgement and your view

Telling me to call you by your first name
Not feeling comfortable I did it all the same
I already knew I got the job
Because I was filled with joy I began to sob

You said it was love at first sight
This filled me with terror and fright
You said you won't force me to do anything
It didn't matter because your words meant nothing

You said you'll do it the old fashioned way
I watched you amaze me every single day
You said you'll take it very slow
That you'll go with my flow

Like the walls of Jericho, I started falling
I looked forward to your calls every night and morning
I couldn't believe what was happening
I really didn't see this coming

You were not my type of guy
I wanted someone handsome and fly
You didn't fit into my ideal man profile
But you were a man with no guile

People said it was because I needed a father figure
Because growing up without him was torture
Though you were old enough to be my father
I considered your age as just a number

I never introduced you to my friends
But you called me your future wife, your best friend
Mother had already matchmade me with Nkechi's son
He had everything I needed but one

He was not you
You are 'the one' and you are not two
You never asked me for anything
But you provided me with everything

Now I finally realize how much you mean to me
Death decided it was time to punish me
The doctor said you had cancer
And that it had spread faster

I didn't get to say goodbye
You never ever made me cry
Words I never taught I'll say
They are now stuck on my lips like clay

Kneeling by your grave
Another opportunity is what I crave
To tell you how much I miss you
How much I adore you, Theo

Though it's too late
And I know this is my fate
I'll say it anyway
Allowing the air to carry my words away

I love you
I miss you
You mean the world to me
Too bad we just couldn't be

So if you love someone
Say it
Even if it's not mutual
Just do it

Awwwww, beautiful.... So sad how it ended.

People said it was because I needed a father figure
Because growing up without him was torture
Though you were old enough to be my father
I considered your age as just a number

This was my favourite line... I love how you write.. Nice read
